Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200 -000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Duties
- **This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until July 01 - 2026
- The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be May 08 - 2026 - with subsequent cut-off dates every 2 weeks

- The Physician Assistant (PA) will manage patient care under the auspices - authority and supervision of an assigned Physician provider
- The incumbent will serve as an integral part of the team for the delivery of care
- Orders written by the PA are to be considered as coming from the supervising physician
- Serves as a direct health care provider in the capacity of a credentialed Physician's Assistant to provide primary urgent and emergent medical services to patients of all ages
- The incumbent serves in Urgent Care - Northern California Health Care System (NCHCS)
- Duties include care and management for patients presenting to Urgent Care with responsibility for the independent examination - diagnosis and treatment within personal credentials and privileges delineated by the medical center
- Major duties include but are not limited to: The incumbent performs a variety of professional direct health care clinical duties within Urgent Care
- Assignments include a wide range of activities including assessing - planning - evaluating and modifying the plan of acute and chronically ill patients
- Secures a health and medical history from the patient or family member - records findings and makes clinical evaluation
- Examines patients and performs initial patient work-up and assessment of patients' care and treatment
- and determines the need for and orders laboratory tests - X-rays and other procedures necessary to complete assessment of the patient
- Makes decisions concerning urgent/emergent care needs of patients with physicians
- works collaboratively with the physician in patient management evaluation and revision of therapeutic plans
- and refers extremely or selected complex medical problems for additional evaluation and management
- Diagnoses urgent/emergent conditions - illness disorder or injury
- institutes treatment of patients
- and seeks the advice of appropriate physicians for more serious or uncommon conditions
- Prescribes for and treats a variety of diseases - disorders - and injuries
- treats patients returning for routine or directed follow-up and treatment of chronic illnesses previously documented in patients' medical records
- writes routine orders on outpatients
- Provides a full range of Urgent Care services or crises interventions in the absence of the physician - including life-saving Urgent Care procedures in order to stabilize a patient within the scope of practice and approved protocols
- Define unknown conditions and resolve critical problems
- Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of urgent/emergent conditions
- Writes prescriptions - orders the administration of medications - dispenses medications and prescribed controlled substance in accordance with treatment protocols
- Records entries into patient's charts including progress notes - treatment rendered - tests or procedures ordered - and notations of prescriptions or orders - and drugs dispensed or administered in accordance with approved protocols
- Provides surveillance adherence to medical care practices and procedures to stabilize chronically ill patients
- adjusts regimens within established protocols recognizing when to refer the patient to the physician or other Urgent Care members
- Emergency and/or Urgent Care DUTIES: The following Urgent Care duties are to be carried out for patients in life threatening situations when a physician is not immediately available
- The PA is to initiate these activities - but makes every effort to summon a physician as soon as possible: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) including electro defibrillation Treatment of acute respiratory failure Treatment of life-threatening traumatic injuries Endotracheal intubation
